Interior Decorating DIY
DIY Interior Decorating
By Keith LondrieFirst of all know the function of each room. Clarify the priorities - is your living room solely intended for day activities or your home office is there too? Do you have separate dining room or an eat-in kitchen? Does your household has children and what's their age? The aim of interior decorating is not only to improve the look but to improve the functionality of each room. Once with your hands on the subject you will find that there are plenty of solutions for big and small spaces that can serve almost any need and satisfy any taste.
The next thing to consider is your personal preferences. While clarifying the functions of each room is mostly about the arrangement of the main furnishings, the second part is about their style as well as the walls and floor coverings, their type and color. Generally speaking there are established color schemes that are deemed to be best for each room. For example peach orange is perfect for kitchens since is stimulates appetite and is not offensive. Bedrooms are often white or within the place spectrum of colors as they should provide comfort and relaxation. Living rooms can benefit from much more bright and strong colors as well as of a combination of two or three colors. As to the floor coverings - you only need to think about which type will e most practical. Obviously tiles are good to high circulation areas which are likely to be cleaned often - kitchens, enty halls, while wooden floors are good for areas that need to be cozy, warm such as bedrooms and living rooms. Another significant factor when choosing your floor coverings is the budget.
Once you are done with the basics - walls and floors, and have all your furniture plaved properly, the fun part begins. And may be this is where interior decorating says it all. It's about all the tiny bits and pieces of your interior design that will make your home unique, cozy and comfortable. A fluffy pillow on the sofa, a rug under the coffee table, a vase of roses on the dining table or a set of candles over the fireplace are the things that make difference. The accessories' type and style depends on you. If you are keen on traditional stuff than go for simple but elegant vases, photo frames, candle holders. Want to go ethnic - find an Indian shop and get some wooden baskets, rugs and leather pillows.
Once you go over this you are done with the interior decorating task. It is not that difficult and all you need to do is to free your imagination and check a few home décor magazines or websites. And remember - interior decoration is not one of task - it is a constant thing that should and will continue naturally in time as you and your lifestyle changes.

Interior Decorating Ideas With a Difference
By Margo J CoufosI will describe ideas that you won't see in your local furniture or department store, but will give your home a wow factor because they're different, never seen before and most importantly they can be made or decorated by yourself. I won't be touching on anything structural or building work of any sort, just purely giving you some exciting ideas to complete your interior decorating. I guess what I am saying you don't have to be an interior designer to decorate your home!
Quite often when you are doing a major renovation on your home or building a new home, you can't wait for it to be completed. But, by that time, you are usually so exhausted with all the hassles of completion that your mind doesn't relate to the interior decorating needs, which of course, are the most important part of completing your home, to make it comfortable and suitable for your lifestyle.
Starting with the two basics of decorating, firstly - establish your style, one that reflects your personality and lifestyle. Secondly- find inspiration, this is something we all need to do. If you haven't already, start tearing out magazine images, print out furniture pieces from the internet and check fashion magazines - they often put together colour combinations that you may never have thought of before.
Try developing a mood board, which is a miniature trial version of the big picture you're trying to create. This is where all the images from magazines are really important, because you can paste them on to mood boards to get a picture of what you would like. The mood boards are always good for paint colours, because you change the colours to adapt to the furniture images. Doing a mood board is great fun! And, if you are in doubt, it gives you a clearer picture of what you are looking for.
Painting
This is one of the first and most crucial decisions you make when you start to decorate. Choose carefully, and choose colours to suit your lifestyle and of course to fit in with your furniture ideas. There are the neutral colours including whites, beige and creams, and then there are the wild colourful palettes ranging from cool blues to warm reds and oranges. There is an opinion out there that people tire of bright colours very quickly. I use bright colours all the time, so I disagree. I find bright colours invigorating, but it is a personal choice.
A great idea if you can't commit to all your walls being the same colour is to work the colour in a different way through thick stripes. Vertical stripes create more height, horizontal stripes increase the width. It is so easy to do, it is just a matter of painting a good base coat in the colour of your choice and measuring the stripes across the wall with masking tape to determine the width of the stripe (I recommend the stripes be even in width). Mask in the areas/stripes where you want the base coat to be highlighted, and paint the other areas the colour of your choice. For a dramatic effect, black and white on one wall looks quite stunning - or for a nautical effect - blue and white - or for a fresh look - deep yellow and white is very refreshing and gives your room a real summery look.
Dining Room
A great and different look for a dining room is, instead of having chairs all the same to match the dining table, why not have a wooden table in teak or oak or any other light wood? The chairs are wooden too, but they are painted all different colours eg. red, green, orange, yellow, blue, turquoise. There is your dining room with a difference - all you need is a vase of bright coloured flowers on your dining table to complete the look.
Do you have furniture that doesn't work with your new interior? Can't afford to throw the furniture out? The colour is wrong and paint doesn't adhere to the surface?
Well, I have the solution to this problem. Cover your furniture with neutral coloured hessian fabric, allow to dry and paint over the hessian with paint. I've used white paint in this fashion on old furniture and the amount of admiring comments I've received is incredible.
Library in a Box
Instead of having a wall of shelves or cabinets to store your books, why not build separate boxes and make a feature of them on one wall? Paint them different colours to work in with your colour scheme.
Lighting
There are many shapes and sizes for ceiling lighting and they are mostly quite boring. A clever way of disguising uninteresting lighting is to take a small, sawn-off dried branch and lots of small branches. Place them over or around the light fitting (depending structure supporting the lights), so the light is filtering through the branches. I have done this over a dining room table. It gives a great ambience to the room, looks good and doesn't cost anything!
Another idea for lighting is to add different types of fabric to lampshades that need a lift. Use colours in the fabric to work in with the colour scheme of the room. Fabric can be glued, tied and knotted or completely covering the shade.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
Mirrors make a tremendous difference in any room of your home. To make a mirror look a little different, glue a whole lot of twigs on to the frame (the twigs can be purchased from craft stores). The end result has a real earthy feel, just by replacing the usual formal frame around a mirror.
Wall hangings
Typically, paintings are hung on walls, but you can achieve something different by placing your favourite piece of fabric (to match in with the colours in the room) behind glass in the style of frame of your choice. Another choice of wall hanging is large canvases painted abstract style, with colours to co-ordinate with the room decor - or be bold and use contrasting colours. For something quite different, what about selecting four pieces of palm tree husks in similar sizes and play around with a design you like - or you could display one large piece along the wall, parallel to the ground. For a beach side effect, glue twigs and sticks to a large canvas, bringing elements of the natural textures of the beach and sand. Paint a large canvas and turn it into a clock by adding the clock components. The clock components can be bought at craft stores.
Bed Heads
We all know that buying new bed heads is quite costly, so my alternative solution is to look for an old door (at home or from a demolition yard). Lay the door horizontally, cover it with thick padding and then cover with the fabric of your choice, preferably a fabric that has some stretch in it, as this makes it easier to handle. The fabric can be glued or stapled, but I find stapling is more secure.
A Very Quirky Idea
Hot foot it to your local discount or variety store and pick up several pairs of cheap rubber thongs or flip-flops, or better still ask all your friends if they will give you their used thongs. I'm sure they will gladly part with them. About 10 to 12 pairs would be enough.
Buy a canvas - about 1 metre x 30cm - place the thongs side by side and let some overhang outside the canvas. When you're happy with the layout, use a strong glue to attach them to the canvas. When the glue is dry, using a spray gun or pressure pack of acrylic paint, spray until all thongs are completely covered. I did mine in white, because it suited the theme I was creating in my beach house. It looks amazing on the wall and definitely has a wow factor!
In conclusion, the ideas I have given you are just a sprinkling of ideas you can use to create something very different and unique for your home. You don't need to take out a bank mortgage to decorate your home, as some of the ideas I've given you are very inexpensive but very effective and - most importantly - very rewarding to create yourself.
I have many, many more ideas to talk about, and one day I'll write a book about them, but in the meantime - good luck with your decorating and I hope this article has got your imagination going.

When You Should Hire a Decorator
If you want a certain feel.
For those who are aiming for a specific emotion in their room, it would be best to get a professional that would provide this result. A good example of this would be for offices. If a lawyer wants their office to look professional, then they would need to use specific colors for the room. However, the office of psychiatrists would need a professional yet comforting design. This way, patients would be able to talk or tell what they fell.
If you're working on multiple rooms.
For large scale projects, the input of a professional would be so much better. The sheer number of the rooms can actually be very tiring to design, thus necessitating the help of a decorator. Also, this requires very different approaches on each room, something a professional has more experience in.
If you don't have the time.
Interior decorating can take up lots of time. It's OK for those who have a flexible schedule, but most people do not really have this option. By hiring a decorator to the job, homeowners can simply coordinate with that person to keep updated with how the project is going. In any case, a decorator would ask their client about any changes, hence making it possible for the individual to monitor everything that happens.
If you're on a budget.
Now this might sound counterproductive, but the fact is that in the long run, decorators are actually cheaper. This is because they are experienced enough to get a specific design at first try. Sometimes, personally designing a home leaves the homeowner unsatisfied, prompting them to make changes that are not within the budget. With a decorator however, they will be able to achieve the results they want without buying something twice. In most cases, professional interior design only starts once the client and the decorator decided on a budget. Plus, interior decorating with a professional gives a client access to discounts provided by the decorator's contacts.
Of course, those who intend on decorating only one room might resort to personally designing it. For example, a guest room might not need as much attention as office rooms or the living room. However, also take into account the importance of the room to be designed. A good example would a nursery. For couples who are about to welcome a baby in their home, it might be a better idea to choose a professional for the job. This way, they can be sure to get results that are perfect for a newborn. Keep in mind though that there are different interior decorators nowadays so be careful when choosing one.

Decorating your balcony
Decorating your balcony is simple and rewarding, says Rekha Kavoor by Abhinav
Decorating your balcony is simple and rewarding, says Rekha Kavoor
Agarden balcony, terrace or even a place to put a few plants, there are many ways to up the style quotient of such an area. With a little imagination, a verandah or balcony can become a striking feature of your home, drawing attention away from the interior of the house, and creating a feel of extra space.
Balconies do not merely have to be restricted to a space for drying clothes. They can be designed to make a pleasant getaway for city dwellers in need of space and fresh air.
Most of us, however, tend to ignore our verandahs or balconies while decorating the house. As a result the space becomes an ideal place for drying clothes or to keep knick-knacks in the corner. If the space is designed properly, your verandah or balcony can double as your private getaway.
Generally it's a common perception to consider a balcony and verandah as the same. The difference is a balcony is an outside area attached to an inside room of a house, apartment, flat or other building. It is usually accessible from inside the house. Balconies are usually built in multi-storey buildings, to provide a small outdoor living area for units or apartments that are above ground level.
While decorating your verandah or balcony you must remember that it has access to three critical aspects - the sun, the wind and the rain. You ought to make sure while decorating it that it is functional so you can enjoy all the three natural elements without being affected by them i.e. without getting sunburn, feeling cold or getting wet.
In a small space, every inch counts, so make sure you plan it well. Make sure the scale of the various built elements and furnishings is appropriate to the size of your overall space.
Use 'layering' (foreground, middle ground, background) to create the illusion of greater size and depth within your balcony.
Since verandahs are open on three sides and walled on one side, you have the advantage of getting as much natural light as possible. For the nights, you can use small lamps or niches or electronic diffused lamps. You can also place a small coffee table and an armchair or a rocking chair to enjoy your evening.
Furniture
Space permitting, furniture could also be coordinated for the outdoorsy look. There are the space-saving folding stools and chairs that could serve double duty inside as well as outside. A garden swing is, of course, the most preferred piece of furniture for those who have the space. Hammocks can be strung up on a need-to-use basis, giving the whole 'laidback' feel to your verandah or garden.
If your balcony is large enough one can also recreate a miniature garden by placing synthetic grass and potted plants in a corner. But ensure that the space is not cluttered with too many potted plants and see to it there is an outlet for water to flow smoothly to avoid any sort of leakages.
Alternatively, a small balcony in a smaller apartment can serve as a playroom for kids, or a quiet place to meditate, a study (if well protected from the dust, sun and rain) or a dressing room (if covered with opaque glass), a store room or a private lounge! So all you need to do is to let your creativity run free.

NAUTICAL INTERIOR DECORATING
Designing Your Home With A Nautical Motif by Rebecca McKeich
When it comes to choosing home decor, you are presented countless different themes to elaborate on. An aquatic or oceanic theme is a great option for anyone looking to centralize their adornments around a common idea. However, those with a passion for the beach and the rolling waves that wash up on its shores, leaving behind shells and driftwood, this type of theme in particular would allow them to house their outdoor passion within their own homes.Nautical themes are frequently used as impressive additions in homes. These redesigns are usually very detailed and not inexpensive to undertake. However, the effects are generally well worth the effort. There are numerous ways that an industrious designer can utilize nautical elements in a home decor. One idea is to implement dark wainscoting on the lower half of walls with a chair rail at the midpoint. This replicates the interior of a fine sailing vessel to stunning effect. The upper half of the wall can be painted in pastels, or be covered with nautically-themed wallpaper to top off the effect.
Moreover, you can get a lot of mileage from simply re-doing curtains and window coverings in a marine blue hue, and remaking them with the same sort of cloth and other materials that go into the sail covers used on sailboats. If you really feel inspired, you might decide to re-paint your walls in this same hue, and go instead with a different, complimentary shade for the curtains and blinds. Nevertheless, painting your walls white is not a bad choice when you are looking to emulate the appearance and textures of the cabin of a boat.
Want to be truly a mariner, or at least look like one? Use ropes to decorate your home. They could be used to decorate just about anything. An vintage picture frame or a worn out lamp can be refreshed and look a class apart when wound with a rope around them. Consider hanging a hammock in a corner as a stand to hold your coats during chilly climate.
Lots of us love the sea as the environment from which all life evolved, and we can remind ourselves of it with a seafaring decorating scheme that makes use of natural items like shells and sand dollars as well as nautical pieces like barometers, portals, clocks, model ships, and beautiful paintings of the ocean.
When planning a room with a nautical theme, remember to include a lighthouse. If you aren't sure just how to do this, a good example to follow is the artist, Thomas Kincaid. All of his paintings have light shining throughout them. Usually lighted windows. He also has pictures with lighthouses. It might even be a good idea to include one of his paintings in your nautical themed room. His work is very unique in his use of light.
